Assignment #1: When There's A Will, There's A Way.

Heart and Sole
Detroit man, James Robertson, 56, walks a total of 21 miles- Monday through Friday just to get to and from work. Robertson leaves his home at 8.a.m in order to be on time for his shift at 2.p.m at Schain Mold and Engineering. This has been his routine for the last decade, ever since his 1988 Honda Accord quit on him. Since then, it has been very difficult for Robertson to regain ownership of a car considering how hard it is to maintain one. Every trip is a struggle but nonetheless, Robertson’s persistence gets him there with a perfect attendance record at work. His will to get to work every day compliments the hard-worker Robertson is and reflects how much he cares about his job. And fortunately, through his spotlight in the media, people were able to gather up enough money to make his commute much easier.

Yahoo has been one of my favorite websites for a very long time. It is very consistent and simple. It's not hard to keep up with and it is not cluttered like most other sites are nowadays. I respect the fact that it sticks to what it truly is. In my opinion, less is always more!

In this particular story, print, images and video were presented. However, the video is by far the best media that was utilized because you can really connect with Robertson's story and his reaction on a deeper level which makes it a more enjoyable experience for the audience. I'm not sure about you guys, but I am a sucker for a good heart wrenching story and what better way to emphasize that than through video? On Yahoo, you can also interact with others through the comment section they provide on their site and see how other people reacted to the story which you can also share on twitter, Facebook, etc. This is a feature that I enjoy because it gives me different perspectives on the same story that I'm reading about, which I believe to be very important in journalism. Whether they're good or bad comments, there's never such thing as bad publicity right?
The other feature that I also appreciate on Yahoo is the out source links that have to do with the story as well. It enables me to get further information and allows me to get further involved in the story itself. For example, in the first article relating to this one, there was a link to the online charity page that was raising money to help put an end to this tough commute.

All in all, the media choices used for this story was more than enough. However, I would have liked to see more coverage on what is going to be done with the rest of the money he's receiving. Maybe a poll to see if it should go to him or other people in Detroit that are facing these particular problems.
